Hanoi City Tour

Hanoi city tour

After breakfast, start your tour with Thang Long Citadel (closed on Mondays & 11:30 - 13:30 daily). Built in the 11th century by the Ly Viet Dynasty, the Citadel was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. The ancient site was the political center of the country for 13 consecutive centuries and served as the capital of Vietnam for eight centuries. Visit the underground war bunker in the same compound. The bunker played an important role in the American war, especially during the 12 days and nights of the Ha Noi - Dien Bien Phu air battle in 1972.

Continue to the Temple of Literature, the first University for the sons of mandarins, for an overview about Hanoian culture and an appreciation for ancient Vietnamese architecture. Drive back to central Hanoi for a walking tour through the Old Quarter to enjoy the bustling local life.

Water puppetry experience

Water puppetry is a unique art that originated in Vietnam’s wet rice civilization. This afternoon, drive 30 minutes from your hotel to a local house situated in a small alley of Hanoi to meet with a water puppet artisan. Born into a family with a tradition of performing water puppetry in Nam Dinh province, Mr. Liem Phan acquired a passion for this folk art in his childhood. Inherited the talent & tradition from his father, he has profound passion of playing with puppets, making puppets by creating a mini stage for water puppetry and bringing his solo performances to several countries outside Vietnam.

Sit down for a cup of tea and learn his stories about how the water puppet originated, his memorable experience traveling to different corners of the world to bring Vietnamese culture & folklores to international friends. Then join a 30-minute show seeing lion dances, buffalo fighting, rice farming, and boat racing, etc. at his private mini water puppet stage on his top house floor. After the show, get yourself in artisan’s role to handle puppets in the water or join with Mr. Liem Phan to make and paint the puppets.

Xuan La Village & Hanoi Backstage Circus

Xuan La village visit

After breakfast, drive 1 hour through lush countryside to Xuan La “To He” village where villagers use colored dough to shape and sculpture characters that bring the funny and charming folk tales to life. A local currently residing in Hanoi will be on the drive with you to show you around his hometown - the perfect host to tell you more about his village and this colorful craft’s history.

Upon arrival, meet his brother, a well-known artisan and witness the full process of making To He. If you are curious, you can even try and make your own creations. There is also time to wander around the village to admire the old architecture before driving back to Hanoi. Avoid visiting this village in the first week of February, June, May and September as most houses are closed as people are working in the rice fields and not many locals are performing handicrafts.

Hanoi Circus backstage experience

The Vietnam Central Circus Camp has long history since 1956. In the afternoon, drive to Hanoi Circus Camp where you will be welcomed by the Director - Mr. Anh Ta, who used to be a magician. Chat with him over a cup of tea to go through the history and journey of his team around Vietnam and abroad.

Then walk around the camp, meet with the artists and the animal tamers to find how hard they do behind the scene to deliver stunning circus performances to audiences. You can try taming the animals or even play some simple moves with the circus artists at the camp. Subject to the availability, you might be able to attend the show after the discussion during the day (Sundays) & evening (weekdays).

Hue

Hue served as an imperial capital to the Nguyen Lords, a feudal dynasty which reigned from the 17th to the 19th century. With splendid emperors tombs, ancient pagodas and the remains of the Citadel, the city retains its royal charm. After breakfast, drive to the Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO listed site.

Hue city tour

From there, you are picked up by electric cart to enter through the towering main gate where you will see the magnificent architecture and gardens while your guide explains about the events and the intrigue of the former royal court. Despite being bombed heavily, there are some incredibly well preserved sections still intact and others which are being lovingly restored.

Then, take a cyclo ride to Thien Mu pagoda, Hue’s best-preserved religious monument. Standing on the riverbank with its seven-story tower, the pagoda is a sight to behold. Returning to your hotel by car.

Kite traditions discovery

Among many places in the country, Hue is regarded as the most ideal venue for kite flying. Except on rainy days, hundreds of kites can be seen soaring in the sky over Imperial Citadel every afternoon.

Kite flying is still an interesting game for all generations in this former Royal city. This afternoon, visit Mr. Cu’s private home, a 45- year-old kite craftsman. Have a chat with him to understand the history of this traditional pastime and share his passion. Then learn how to create a kite yourself. If the weather allows it, enjoy the excitement as your kite rises into the blue sky. Finally, transfer back to your hotel.

Hue countryside tour

Located only 7 km from Hue’s center, Thanh Toan village is located in the peaceful countryside where the scenes of an ancient 16th century village are still very much visible through the landscape, temples and way of life. After breakfast, take a drive to this village and be prepared to get yourself involved in some hands-on experiences to get a taste of rural life. Meet the farmers, and depending on the season, you will be instructed on some processes of rice farming.

Continue by rickshaw to explore the countryside, the village and clans shrine house, and some typical local workshops. Visit the informative agriculture museum to understand more about rice production before hopping on a sampan to go fishing using ancient techniques. Pass by the intriguing 17th century tiled roof bridge, listen to local chitchatting, chanting folklore verse or even have your fortune read by an old charming lady. These are just a few relaxing moments which offer insights into rural life that you cannot get on any average tourist trail.

Discover the ancient art of Truc Chi

Truc Chi which is a type of paper made from bamboo, is a new art form of Hue, exquisitely created by a young talented artist and his colleagues after many years of research, study and practice. Made only with bamboo materials, the Truc Chi are typically very detailed and truly unique one of a kind pieces. In the afternoon, visit Truc Chi workshop, chat with the artist to understand more about the art works process, promotion & exhibitions. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, Hoi An was a prosperous trading port. Today, this World Heritage-listed ancient town boasts well-preserved buildings, pedestrianized streets and unique cuisine, allowing visitors a glimpse of its illustrious past.

Hoi An walking tour

There is plenty to visit including the old merchant’s houses with influences from Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese architecture, the 400-year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, the Assembly Hall of the Chaozhou Chinese Congregation with outstanding wood carvings; and the colorful market with stalls brimming with local specialties including silk, which can be turned into fashionable garments within a day or two. Silk lanterns, the simple yet colorful handicraft is now an essential part of Hoi An culture.

The lantern is inspired and hand-made by local artisans and is meant to bring good fortune. It has really made a comeback thanks to an experienced man - Mr. Huynh Van Trung who was born in a traditional lantern making family. Trung inherits valuable skills in making lanterns from his father - the well-known artisan Huynh Van Ba. Chat with him for a brief introduction to the history, shape, and color of the lanterns as well as the stages of production. Try creating your own lantern and take it home as a souvenir.
