Bangkok

Step of the tourist trail and find hidden corners of Thai life in the capital. Blast along the boulevards of the royal district by tuk-tuk to reach Vimanmek Mansion, made entirely out of teak wood without a single nail.

Hop onto Rattanakosin Island to discover a market from 1899. Return to the river passing by a small plant and orchid market. A Wat or temple emerges, beautiful teak pavilions surround it.

Bangkok → Khao Yai National Park → Khorat

After breakfast, the journey east starts today.

Chanoensao is next to Bangkok but it's rural and quiet and criss-crossed by canals that have been the means of transportation for generations. The road climbs and gets greener as it passes the area of Khao Yai National Park.

You enter Isaan, the north eastern province. Khorat is the first city you will come across. For dinner, your guide will suggest some local favorites.

Surin → Khon Kaen

After breakfast, leave for Surin that is famous for a week per year, when the elephant festival takes place. The Suai people for generations have cared for the grey giants who have been most useful help in forestry.

Another famous feature of Isaan and Surin is weaving of silk. Most local women spend the empty days between the planting and harvesting seasons at the weaving loom. Deep in the heart of Isaan is the town of Roi Et, with a chance to make your offering at the country’s highest standing Buddha image.

Khon Kaen → Phu Wiang National Park → Chiang Khan

After breakfast, leave for Khon Kaen that is called the capital of the east, and is a busy little place.

Soon we move on into the green hills to the North West. While looking for uranium, miners discovered a giant bone which led to a dinosaur-craze and the establishing of the Phu Wiang National Park. On your way north you will realize that you have reached another area all together; the dry, flat fields of the past days make place for rugged hills covered in dense jungle.

In the afternoon, you reach sleepy Chiang Khan on the sandy banks of the mighty Mekong River.

Chiang Khan

After breakfast, take a boat on the Mekong and glide past the rapids. The Mekong originates high in the mountains of China and comes down forming a border between many countries, from China and Myanmar to Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Try larb with fish or beef, and fried riverweed with sesame seed for a quick taste of Laos. And betel leaves folded to contain herbs, peanuts, coconut and a sweet sauce, traditionally eaten to keep going on a hard day but worth a try for the distinct flavors.
