Colombo → Wadduwa

Upon arrival meet our representative at the airport, then transfer to Wadduwa

The surrounding waters of Wadduwa are ideal for water sports like windsurfing and on terra firma, you’ve got games like beach volleyball going on. And as Wadduwa is still an active fishing village, nothing beats a stroll down to the boats as the fishermen bring in the day’s catches.

You’ll find a real pick and mix of shops, many selling traditional Sri Lankan handicrafts such as fierce-looking masks and colourful wood carvings. There are also a fair number of boutiques and jewellery shops which are easier on the pocket than back home. There are a few bars and restaurants scattered in the area which adds to the charm of this beachside resort town.

After the breakfast transfer to Koggala. En route visit to Galle Fort.

Guided Walk at Galle Fort

Galle was once the chief port of Sri Lanka. The Galle fort is a vast garrison spanning 90 acres, which was originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. Their influences are evident in the eclectic architecture all around, including the famous Dutch Reformist Church. When the British took over the fort, they too added their own influences.

Entering the gates of the fort you will experience a much slower pace of life compared to the frenetic movements outside the Garrison’s walls. Galle Fort is one of Sri Lanka’s 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. After the visit, continue to Koggala

Mirissa

After an early breakfast whale watching excursion at Mirissa.

Mirissa Whale Watching

The waters off Mirissa in the southern coast of Sri Lanka are home to some of the largest whale and dolphin colonies in the world. Whales are nature's giants. As long as 30m and weighing as much as 180 tonnes, the blue whale is the largest animal to have roamed the earth. All varieties of whales were hunted in large numbers until the middle of the 20th century, and their dwindled numbers have not improved. This makes whales a rare sight anywhere in the world.

November to April is the best period to watch whales and dolphins, as colder weather in the northern hemisphere brings these magnificent creatures to the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Among the varieties you might see are blue, Bryde’s and sperm whales. Killer whales are a rare sight, but not unknown in these waters.

More numerous than whales are the varieties of dolphins. Playful and attractive, dolphins are among the most intelligent animals on earth. Among the varieties on view are common, bottlenoses, Spinner, Risso’s and striped dolphins.

Rest of the day at leisure at the beaches of Mirissa.

Colombo City Tour

Upon arrival to Colombo, we will have a city tour of Sri Lanka’s modern and vibrant commercial capital.

Colombo has been an important port in the Indian Ocean since ancient times. Traders from the Middle East used Sri Lanka as a well-positioned exchange center, where they traded in ivory, precious stones and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and pepper. These commodities were both very highly sought after, and exorbitantly priced in Europe.

Colombo is a shopper’s paradise with a vast selection of local malls, Sri Lankan arts and handicrafts, and the famous Pettah, where anything from mobile phones, to clothes and even stationery can be found. With numerous buddhist temples, hindu kovils, muslim mosques and christian churches in Colombo, visitors can understand the melting-pot which makes up Sri Lanka’s unique, multi-cultural atmosphere and its tolerance and respect of all cultures and religions.

You may also walk along the Galle Face Green, which is frequented by locals and foreigners alike as they stroll in a gentle pace on the promenade, or sit on the benches to watch the world go by, or even to indulge in the national hobby of kite flying.
