Colombo → Kalpitiya

Upon arrival, you will be met by our representative and depart for Kalpitiya

Apart from the natural beauty of the western peninsular area of Kalpitiya, there exists a plethora of things to see and do for those lucky enough to visit. With the close-knit fishing community dominating the lives of the local people, visitors can gain real insight into the aspects of working life, away from the city.

After watching the night fishing boats return in the morning, a visit to one of the fish markets offers the opportunity to choose the evening meal directly from the day's catch! The Dutch Fort and St. Peter's Kirks Church in the town itself are interesting examples of Sri Lanka's rich history and colonial past. Leisurely boat rides up the lagoon and canoe trips down the river are a pleasant way of exploring the coastline, whilst 4WD Jeep rides along the deserted sand dunes between the ocean and the lagoon offer a unique way of watching the colorful evening sunsets.

However, in the recent past whale and dolphin watching tours have become the defining element of Kalpitiya as a hub for tourism. There are also a number of water sports for the adventurous traveler here.

Whale & Dolphin Watching

Breakfast at the hotel. If you are into whale watching, you should visit Kalpitiya in March or April when many sperm whales are nearby. The sperm whale is the largest of all predators (that have teeth). This whale species is currently on the endangered list. In fact, many of the sperm whale species are now extinct due to many years of whaling.

You can easily spot one of these mammoth creatures by their enormous heads, and they have the largest brains of any animal on the planet. The sperm whale gets its name from the unusual fluid inside of its head. It is believed to help the large mammal stay afloat, but science does not really understand its purpose. The fluid turns to a waxy substance in cold waters. You will often see these huge creatures in pods of about seven whales. However, 15 or 20 is not uncommon, and pods as large as 50 have been spotted.

Where you see sperm whales you may also see pelagic seabirds. These birds live out on the sea and hunt for fish. They may come ashore for mating purposes, but you will need to be at sea to observe them. Once we finish this activity, we will return to Kalpitiya where you will have the afternoon at leisure.

Kalpitiya → Wilpattu

After breakfast, we will depart for Wilpattu National Park.

Evening Safari at Wilpattu National Park

The Wilpattu National Park is the largest and oldest national park in Sri Lanka. It was widely regarded as the place to spot the Sri Lankan Leopard in its natural habitat. There are 30 recorded species of mammals in the Wilpattu National Park. These include the Sri Lankan Elephant, Sri Lankan Leopard, Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, and Spotted deer, Water Buffalo, Sambar, Mongoose, Mouse and Shrew.

Visitors flock to the Park mostly in the hope of seeing the Leopard and the Sloth Bears. The Sri Lankan Sloth Bear is a highly threatened species with less than a 1000 numbers surviving in the wild. There are many Villu and lakes at Wilpattu. These are identified as the main topographical features and are importance to resident and migratory water-birds.

After breakfast, we will depart for Anuradhapura

Visit to the Sacred City of Anuradhapura

Listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO, Anuradhapura is a truly an archaeological wonder with many world famous sites to visit. It is the best place to admire the ancient past of Sri Lanka. This city was once the seat of power in the country over 1400 years ago, many great kings here left a legacy of architectural and engineering marvels. You will see some of the most famous as well as the tallest Dagoba in Sri Lanka, known as Ruwanweli Maha saya

The remains of historical palaces, temples, monasteries, ceremonial baths and the temple of the holy Bo-tree (Sri Maha Bodhi) are also in this historically significant city. The Sri Maha Bodhi Bo tree was grown from a sapling of the very tree in which Buddha found enlightenment while he was meditating, more than 2500 years ago.

Once we finish our visit, we will continue to the beaches of Trincomalee

Trincomalee

After breakfast, you will have the day at leisure to enjoy the sublime beaches of Trincomalee.

Trincomalee known as “Trinco” has a natural harbor reported to be one of the world’s best. The harbor is vast in size, stretching over an expanse of approximately 2,000 hectare situated in the northeast of Sri Lanka. Trincomalee boasts of some of the country’s finest beaches at Uppuveli and Nilaveli. Also, Pigeon Island closer to Trinco offers water sports such as scuba diving and snorkeling.

Away from the beaches, Trincomalee town has one of the most interesting and complex colonial histories in Sri Lanka, with its ownership changing between the Kings of Kandy, the Dutch, the British and even the French at times throughout the history. Evidence of colonial times exists in examples of architecture in Trincomalee town.

Pasikudah → Sigiriya → Colombo

After breakfast, we will depart towards Sigiriya, where we will have a tour of the legendary Lion Rock Fortress

Visit to Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress

The ancient city of Sigiriya is a premier eco-tourism destination in Sri Lanka, designated a World Heritage Site in 1982. It is also proposed that the site should be named the eighth wonder of the world, indicating it is in the same league as other international wonders such as the Grand Canyon and Ancient Pyramids.

Translated as 'Lion Rock' into English, the name of the monument indicates the way in which visitors used to begin their final ascent to the top - through the open jaws and throat “giriya" of a lion “sinha”. Unfortunately, the only remains of this lion figure are the gigantic paws, sculpted into the side of the rock.

The topography of the area is flat except for the massive rock outcrop of the fortress itself (which rises an incredible 600 feet up from the green scrub jungle). The unusual rock is particularly interesting due to its flat top (nearly an acre in size), that was used in its entirety to build King Kasyapa's fortress complex, still evident by the presence of the extensive ruins. Sigiriya's irrigation and landscaped gardens stand as a testament to the progress and ingenuity of its architects.

Once we complete our visit, we will continue to Colombo
