Mirissa Whale Watching

Breakfast at the hotel. The waters off Mirissa in the southern coast of Sri Lanka are home to some of the largest whale and dolphin colonies in the world. Whales are nature's giants. As long as 30m and weighing as much as 180 tonnes, the blue whale is the largest animal to have roamed the earth.

All varieties of whales were hunted in large numbers until the middle of the 20th century, and their dwindled numbers have not improved. This makes whales a rare sight anywhere in the world. November to April is the best period to watch whales and dolphins, as colder weather in the northern hemisphere brings these magnificent creatures to the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Among the varieties you might see are blue, Bryde’s and sperm whales. Killer whales are a rare sight, but not unknown in these waters.

More numerous than whales are the varieties of dolphins. Playful and attractive, dolphins are among the most intelligent animals on earth. Among the varieties on view is common, bottlenose, Spinner, Risso’s and striped dolphins

Wildlife Sri Lanka night safaris in Yala National Park

A daytime safari in Sri Lanka might allow you to see a variety of animals that dwell its national parks, but for an incomparable adventure in wildlife viewing, nothing beats the trills and excitement of a night safari. Wild Life Tour Sri Lanka experience and team of experts allow you to experience the ultimate big game night safari in Sri Lanka.

Although you might be lucky to spot a Sri Lankan Leopard, a Sloth Bear, or a herd of Sri Lankan Elephants in the wilderness during a dawn or dusk safari, you will have no value as to their behavior after sundown, when all manner of thing happen under cover of darkness. A must for any night safari expedition is the use of special Red Beam Tources, which will not disturb the activities of the animals during night time.

Insects come alive at night, and with them, the entire nocturnal food chain, from moths to leopards and everything in between gets hyperactive. Although Sri Lanka’s national Parks do not allow visitors after dark, the broader areas are perfect viewing areas for all manners of animals. Jeep Safari are optional, as walking safaris are a better way to ensure that none of the wildlife is disturbed..

Yala National Park

Full-day safari in Yala

Breakfast at the camp. Your best chance to see a leopard is generally first thing in the morning and then again at dusk. The male leopards in Yala are very confident animals and they are often seen walking the tracks during the day. Young males in particular seem to have no fear of the jeep, which can lead to some excellent photographic opportunities.

As we are setup very close to the park, you will be first in to the core areas, which are best for wildlife viewing and will be able to avoid long travel time to the park entrance, queuing for permits which take place before safaris begin. Even during evening safaris you will be inside until last minute and the entrance to the campsite also mimics the experience of a mini safari through the forest.

Apart from the leopards there are a large number of elephants living inside the park and they can be seen bathing in the numerous lakes in the vicinity. You can also see spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, wild buffaloes, sloth bear, jackal and mongoose. The bird life is also fantastic and it is amazing how close you can get to them from the confines of the jeep, you can see Rosy Starlings, Paradise Flycatchers, Crested Hawk Eagles, Blue-Tailed Bee-Eaters and Common Loras.

Half-day jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park

This safari is an unforgettable bird watching experience as Udawalawe is one of the best parks for bird watching too. Serpent Eagles, Hawk Eagles, White Bellied Sea Eagles, Black Eagles, Black Capped Bulbuls, Racket Tailed Drongos, Malabar Pied Horn Bills, White Necked Storks, Open Bills, Ibis, Shama - the forest Nightingale, Strol Billed Kin Fishers and peacocks are found in fair numbers.

Negombo Beach

After safari, transfer to Negombo. Negombo is a historically interesting place with beautiful beaches, and strongly influenced by the Catholic Church, often referred to as “Little Rome’.

The lagoon at Negombo is famous for its harvest of lobsters, crabs and prawns. Fish auctions regularly take place on the beach and are definitely worth a look, as are the many canals which meander through the area. The city has a colorful past in that the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British all laid claim to it at different times. The town has several buildings dating back to the Dutch and Portuguese Colonial days.
