Odessa

Arrival in Odessa and transfer to the grand old Hotel Londonskaya near the top of the Potemkin Steps. 


Odessa City Tour

We will then start our guided city tour. In the 19th century Odessa was the undisputed Queen of the Black Sea, presiding over a boom in trade that made the city prosperous and embellished it with many fine buildings. In the afternoon we go on a walking tour around the city, visiting the Archaeological Museum and other main sights as well as that most famous of all Odessa landmarks, the Potemkin Steps

Belgorod Dniestrovsky

Excursion to Belgorod-Dniestrovsky

After breakfast we will start our excursion around the Black Sea coast to the south-west to Belgorod-Dniestrovsky on the Dienstr River estuary. 

It is dominated by the great Fortress of Ak-Kerman, an Ottoman stronghold dating from the XVth century. It overlooks the important archaeological site of Tiras, one of the most important ancient Greek settlements on the Black Sea. 

Lunch will be at the nearby winery and cultural centre of Shabo. Return to Odessa.

Southern Wineries → Causeni → Tiraspol

Moldovan Wineries and Monasteries Full Day Tour

After breakfast, return down the Black Sea coast and cross the border into Moldova. Visit Purcari Winery, founded in 1827, whose Negru de Purcari was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. 

Lunch will be at the nearby small family owned Et Cetera Winery. After lunch we will visit the small XIVth century church at Causeni, whose interior is completely covered in XVIIIth century frescoes, the only such church in Moldova (normally closed: opened to us by special permission). 

Continue to Tiraspol, capital of Transnistria.

Transnistria

Transnistria Half Day Tour

After breakfast, we will travel to Bender. Transnistria is a mainly Russian-speaking enclave within Moldova that broke away after the collapse of the Soviet Union, when it fought a short war with Moldova and declared unilateral independence. Although not recognized internationally, it continues to look to Moscow and is the sole remaining Soviet Communist ‘country’ in Europe. 

After lunch in the Kumanek Ukrainian restaurant we visit the great Fortress of Tighina in Bender, overlooking the right bank of the Dniestr River and associated with figures as diverse as Charles XII of Sweden, and Baron Munchausen. 

Next we will continue to Chisinau.

Cricova Winery

Cricova Underground Winery

After breakfast depart on foot to visit the Moldova History Museum next door to the hotel. Then continue by coach to the Cricova Winery just outside Chisinau for a winery tour and lunch

The state owned Cricova Winery is the largest in the country –one of the largest in Europe- whose wine and champagne is stored in underground cellars extending for an astonishing 120 km. 

After lunch visit the XVIIIth century Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Curchi and continue to the village of Butuceny.

Orhei Open Air Museum

Breakfast at the hotel. The village of Butuceni is in the centre of the Orheiul Vechi open air museum complex. This is an area on a huge bend in the Raut River that is particularly rich in historic remains, ranging from the 4th millennium BC Cucuteni-Tripolye site and 2nd century BC Thraco-Dacian fortifications, to the remains of a XIVth century Tartar citadel and bath complex and a XVth century rock-cut monastery complex

The village of Butuceni itself is a conservation village, with exquisite examples of traditional Moldovan rural architecture. The morning will be spent visiting the various historic remains by coach. Lunch will be at another traditional pensione, the Casa di Lunca in the nearby village of Trebujeni (still a part of the Orheiul Vechi complex). 

Free afternoon free to relax or explore this delightful village.

Moldova Ancient Monasteries

Moldova Monasteries Full Day Tour

After breakfast we will head for Saharna and Tipova monasteries on the Dniestr River. The Holy Trinity Monastery at Saharna dates from the XIIth-XVth century, tucked away in a small valley next to the Dniestr. The Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery is cut into the river cliff at Tipova, and is the oldest in Moldova. 

Lunch will be of local specialties in the rural Hanul lui Hanganu guesthouse.

Iasi City Tour

After breakfast, a full day sightseeing in Iasi. Capital of the Principality of Moldavia during the Ottoman period from the XVIth to XIXth centuries, then briefly capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918, and now capital of the Romanian Region of Moldavia and cultural capital of Romania as a whole. 

As such it is endowed with some magnificent public buildings. Highlights will include the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (the oldest university in Romania, founded in 1860), the Central Library, the XVIIth century fortified Golia Monastery, the Vasile Alecsandri Theatre, and the Metropolitan Cathedral and Roznovanu Palace

Lunch will be in the Casa Bolta Rece Restaurant, and the visit will end with a visit to Cetatuia Monastery, located on a hill overlooking Iasi.

Romanian Monasteries

Romanian Monasteries Tour

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Iasi and drive north through the Southern Bukovina Region to visit some of the famed painted churches of Romania. On the way visit the spectacular great 14th century fortress of Neamt. Further north we visit probably the two most famous of the painted churches in the monasteries of Voronet and Sucevita, both early XVIIth century. Cross the border into Ukraine and continue to Chernivtsi.

Chernivtsi City Tour

Breakfast at the hotel. Ukrainian Chernivtsi, Romanian Cernauti, German Czernowitz: also once known as ‘Little Vienna’ and ‘Little Jerusalem’ because of its Jewish population, it is many cities in one. A delightful little Habsburg enclave within Ukraine, Czernowitz was the capital in the XIXth century of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bukovina and endowed with some lovely buildings. 

The morning is spent sightseeing, including the magnificent XIXth century University buildings, formerly the Palace of the Metropolitan of Bukovina and a walking tour through the mainly pedestrianized centre to admire the baroque and art nouveau architecture. 

Free afternoon to explore this delightful city independently.

Kamyanets Podolsky

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive in the morning to the XIVth century Fortress of Khotyn, spectacularly situated overlooking the Dniestr River, one of a string of such fortresses defending the eastern marches of Europe against the Tatars. 


Kamanyets-Podolski City Tour

Continue to Kamyanets Podolski where we will have lunch. Formerly a part of the Kingdom of Galicia and for a while capital of the short lived Ottoman province of Podolia, Kamanyets-Podolski is one of the most spectacularly sited towns in eastern Europe, it is entirely surrounded by high river cliffs in a huge bend in the Smotrych River, effectively forming an island and overlooked by a massive castle. 

In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of the old town, including the fortress, the Catholic Cathedral, and a still preserving minaret from the Ottoman period.

After breakfast, an early morning departure crossing the border back into Moldova and continuing to Soroca where we will have lunch. 


Soroca Fortress Tour

In Soroca we will visit the circular fortress on the banks of the Dniestr, one of the chain of defences that we have been viewing from Belgorod to Kamyanets. Soroca is also the gypsy capital of Moldova, marked by a whole quarter of incredibly flamboyant mansions overlooking the town. Continue to Chisinau.
