Upon arrival at Cochin International airport, you will be provided assistance followed by transfer to the hotel.

A historical hub for spice trade, Cochin has always been one of the most cosmopolitan cities in India. Its distinct character features Arab, Jewish, Chinese and South East Asian influences, as well as the very important presence left by the Portuguese and the Dutch who controlled this enclave for many centuries.

Today we will start our grand adventure in Kerala with a half-day city tour of Cochin. We will learn of the old days of the city making stops at its colonial landmarks including the Dutch Palace at Mattancherry, the Jewish SynagogueSt. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Basilica, apart from the iconic Chinese fishing nets .

You will spend a cultural evening attending a fascinating Kathakali performance, an ancient fusion of dance and drama that is one of South India's most elaborate forms of art. Kathakali presentations feature hypnotizing performers with elaborate make up and colorful dresses recreating the legends of the Hindu epics.

Cochin → Periyar

After breakfast we will drive to the lush hills of Thekkady to visit Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Periyar is South India's most popular nature reserve and is home to bisons, antelopes, samber, wild boars, monkeys, a rich birdlife and most importantly, elephants. After arriving at Periyar we will have plenty of time to unwind at the lush surrounds of the resort. 

In the afternoon we will learn why Kerala is known as "India's spice garden" with a spice plantation tour. We will learn how pepper, cardamom, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and many other spices are grown and processed.

Today we will have a nature walk in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a great chance to watch birds, butterflies and other small species within the park. The walk lasts about 3 hours, its not challenging and suitable for people of all ages. (Provided by Park Authority, you may have to share this activity with other people).

In the afternoon we will spend some time with the elephants of the reserve. We will go on an elephant safari through coffee, cardamom and pepper plantations for 30 min, we will then participate in the washing of the elephants for 30 min and finally feed them for another 30 min.

In the evening we will soak in the traditions and cultural diveristy of Kerala witnessing a tribal dance of the Irular ethnic group. The Irular live by a unique combination of animist and Hindu beliefs and their dances involve the entire community, including men, women and children.

Periyar → Kumarakom

After breakfast we will drive to Kumarakom, located deep inside the backwaters of Kerala. After checkin in at the hotel, you will have the rest of the day at leisure to relax at the resort. 

In the evening we will enjoy a sunset cruise on Vembandu Lake (shared with other passengers). Cruise along this stunning lake and venture into narrow canals that criss-cross typical Kerala villages, green paddy fields and verdant coconut trees. The cruise on the motor boat takes you to small islets tucked away from civilization where you will get unique glimpses of its serene village life.

We will devote this day to relaxing at the resort and perhaps indulging in one of its Ayurvedic therapies (not included). Regarded as the medical practice of Hinduism, Ayurveda looks at health as a combination and balance among mind, body and soul.
